Overcoming the Challenges of Dirty Data – Assuring Accurate Patient Identity

The importance of accurate patient identity and patient matching is often underestimated – yet it is a "Big Deal". EMPI's are the foundational backbone required to support optimal health information exchange and quality patient care. This session will cover today's typical patient matching challenges and their root causes, operational impacts of poor MPI quality and recommended steps for mitigating issues and improving MPI data integrity and HIE integration efforts.

The 5 Most Important Topics for HIPAA in 2014

Yes, ICD-10 is right around the corner and certainly is dominating the spotlight in 2014, but if HIPAA takes a backseat this year, it could be at the expense of some important focus areas that need your attention. During this presentation these 5 topics may well be the subject of what keeps us awake at night as concerns grow about the potential for a breach of PHI that we do not see. This session will focus on these issues that HIM face and offer some strategies to manage these challenges and reduce the risk of breach.

Information Governance
"Drowning in Data: The Driving Need for Information Governance"

The healthcare IT market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 7.4% for at least the next four years. Factors driving the growth of the healthcare information technology market are the rise in pressure to cut healthcare costs, growing demand to integrate healthcare systems, meaningful use, the rise in aging population, initiatives to reduce medication errors and improve patient safety and the rise in incidences of chronic disorders. This growth significantly increases the number of source systems originating healthcare data and the volume of patient data created. Patient data is expanding 50% per year. Currently we created 60 terabytes of information annually (1,000 times more than a decade ago).

This data is being exchanged through local, regional and state health information organizations and all of this exchange is dependent on the accurate and complete information from each Data Trading Partner.

The objectives of this session will review the current state of healthcare data exchange, the ONC's Patient Matching Initiative and the necessity of all provider organizations to develop and implement a strong information governance program to mitigate data exchange issues and improve EHR data integrity.

"The Hidden Challenges of Patient Portals"

Meaningful Use and patient engagement initiatives have created a strong need for provider organizations and HIOs to develop patient portals. There are a myriad of technical and policy challenges in building patient portals. The patient portal is a "release of information" function and all of the regulatory issues facing HIM when releasing patient records must be built into the security access capabilities as early adopters of these portals have learned. This session will focus on these issues and solutions to these challenges.
