EMPI Consulting
At Just Associates, our consultants have a wide-breadth of experience within the EMPI domain. Our firm focuses exclusively on the processes and technology that form the foundation of proper patient identification and electronic record linking. We have a strong understanding of what it takes to obtain and maintain clean MPIs and how to successfully connect MPIs within IDNs. This broad understanding of what is needed to successfully connect patient data enables us to help clients identify and define their EMPI requirements.
Our EMPI consulting practice includes: EMPI configuration consulting, interface testing, data mapping, Patient Data Integration Consulting, operational consulting related to maintaining a clean MPI and MPI clean up projects, EMPI Requirements Definition / RFP creation and EMPI Maintenance. Through these consulting projects, we have worked with every major HIS and EMPI system in the market.
Proper configuration of the EMPI is essential in prevention of patient identification issues and problems. An example of this is designing the guarantor data entry. Unless care is taken with how this function works, clients may be inadvertently creating an overlay of patient information with guarantor information. Maximal configuration requires an in-depth understanding of database structure and the implications of the choices made during system design.
Interfaces between systems either contribute to overall data integrity within the organization or represent a weak link that can cause integrity failures. Determining which classification a specific interface falls into requires a mature understanding of system complexities. Just Associates can provide proper testing scenarios that expose weaknesses.
Improper data mapping can create data integrity issues. When fields are either not mapped to the correct field in the receiving system, or if table-driven values are not converted properly, the validity of the receiving systems’ information is compromised.
Patient Access Consulting provides our clients with a comprehensive view of the existing processes and technology that are utilized during registration. Our approach evaluates current methodologies and actual use of existing systems to identify areas with potential for improvement. We evaluate current training practices and provide both tools and recommendations for improvement.
After root causes of patient and/or person identification issues have been identified and plans undertaken to address outstanding concerns, it may be necessary to conduct an EMPI reconciliation (EMPI Cleanup) project to ensure that data among the disparate databases is synchronized.
We havesignificant experience with streamlining and automating merge functions within various hospital/clinic information systems. When feasible, these types of scripts can save thousands of hours of manual work on a go forward basis.
Preventative processes and technologies are the best strategies to minimize future data integrity issues. Just Associatesassists with this important initiative by providing best practices surrounding naming conventions, data definitions, search routines and training modules for both employees performing data capture and those who are charged with keeping the data clean. Just Associates has developed extensive training modules surrounding validity of possible duplicate pairs that we use for our own Patient Identity Specialists’ training. This significantly speeds up the training of new staff but also increases their accuracy and productivity. These training tools and best practices are made available to our clients.
