Understanding HL7: What Every HIM Professional Needs to Know
Beth H. Just, MBA, RHIA
President, Just Associates, Inc.

The number of interfaces between various health care databases continues to increase as more and more components of the medical record are automated.  But, as an HIM professional, do you know the challenges associated with transferring patient data from one system to another.  Learn the basics of HL7 messages and why HIM professionals need to be involved in deciding what scenarios patient data can and should be sent from one system to another and the data mapping of these messages.  Examples of scenarios that can and do go wrong will be shown to highlight the importance of HIM involvement in interface message design and testing. This presentation will de-mystify HL7 messaging and empower the HIM professional to be more involved with their IT departments.

HIM Involvement in Health Information Exchanges

Tuesday, June 24, 2008 - 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM
Beth H. Just, MBA, RHIA
President, Just Associates, Inc.

Electronically linking disparate clinical data is challenging within a single healthcare organization; it is even more difficult for HIEs to achieve success exchanging data. Many HIEs start with the technology selection to be used to complete the data exchange without first defining their information exchange purposes or the business processes required to accomplish the data exchange. HIM Professionals need to be involved early in the HIE formation. We bring tremendous knowledge and skills that can help these HIEs be successful - and subsequently improve patient care for all of us. Tools have been developed to help bring a consistent message and support HIM professionals in this role. Learn about the deliverables of one of AHIMA's recent e-HIM workgroups, "HIM Principles in HIE" created to help HIM Professionals lead discussions on quality health information data exchange.

Monday, October 13, 2008 - 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM

Technology and health information exchange (HIE) have created a whole new opportunity for corruption of data. This session will provide insights into the pitfalls created by technology and the innate nature of data.

Clinical Data Exchange: Developing the Right Stride for Hurdling the Obstacles

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008 - 11:15 AM to 12:15 PM

Arthur Davidson, MD, MSPH Director, Public Health Informatics, Principal Investigator, CORHIO State and Regional Demonstration Project
Beth H. Just, MBA, RHIA
CEO, Just Associates, Inc.

The creation of Health Information Exchanges and RHIOs has exploded nationally in the past few years, but not all are achieving their objectives or staying the course. As with running hurdles, the development of a successful HIE is dependent upon developing a stride that allows the clearing of many hurdles - this stride development includes the technique (or technology), but also significant energy; those factors involving people and processes and a tenacious commitment to the fundament beliefs in what their organization is trying to achieve. Join us in learning about real world challenges in moving past writing and obtaining funding for an HIE, to actually achieving interoperability, financial sustainability and ultimately building a foundation that helps providers improve the patient care they deliver.
