Ongoing Outsourced MPI Management
The Need for Vigilance
Effective management of a master patient index is a critical element in maintaining data quality and integrity. Health care organizations continue to struggle with the problem of duplicate, overlay, and overlap records. Human error at registration in hospitals, emergency rooms, and physician offices frequently creates transposed birthdates or social security numbers, nicknames used instead of given names, misspellings, and a host of other actions that generate duplicate records. This paper will discuss the importance of ongoing outsourced MPI Management.
The PI Integrity Work Group (including Beth Haenke Just, MBA, RHIA and President of Just Associates, and contributor, Linda Boch, RHIA and Sr. Consultant at Just Associates) identified nine variables that influence, in varying degrees, our ability to build and sustain a database in a high state of identity integrity. These key influencers are: Industry standards, interfaces, algorithms, unique identifiers, business processes, data accuracy, data quality, training, and medical devices. This paper discusses each variable at a high level and its impact on PI Integrity.
